Russian scientists have developed an apparatus able to define cancer tumor delimitations, and therefore its surgical removal would be more effective, reported Kirill Belik, the assistant manager of the Novosibirsk Research Institute of the Medical Engineering (NRIME).
“Today the most effective method of treatment of oncological deseases is surgical one, and a chemotherapy and other treatment methods are mainly used as additional”, Belik said.
According to his words, at the present day merely 10-15% of patients with the stomach cancer survive only five years
after an operation.
“It is so because a surgeon, excising tissues infected by cancer, can’t always exactly define the tumor delimitations, it can be hidden in healthy tissues of organ”, scientist reported.
He said that the developed apparatus would help a surgeon to specify the tumor con
tour, to define delimitation between healthy organ tissue and cancer cells during the surgery.
“It is a surgical apparatus by means of which a surgeon during a surgery would be able to diagnose a tumour on-the-spot and choose the most optimal way of its excising. This system is able to prolong lives of many people and reduce the amount of cancer fatalities”, Belik marked.
The scientists of NRIME of Novosibirsk State Technical University, Novosibirsk State Medical University and Siberian Research
and Test Center of Medical Equipment were engaged in creation
of apparatus for 15 years.
“In the nearest future NRIME would make a production prototype of the apparatus and would start its clinical and technical trial “, Belik added
